Champagne Roads – Part 2: A Whisper in the Vines

The limo bus glided past the orchards of Lockeford as the early sun kissed the landscape. Laughter echoed from the back as the bachelorette crew from Roseville recovered from a wild night that ended at The Union in downtown Lodi. Today’s vibe was more refined—or so they thought.

With plans set for Harney Lane Winery and a tasting at Bokisch Vineyards, they had swapped sequins for sundresses, but not one of them was prepared for what happened next.

Their driver, Vanessa, rolled down the windows just as they crossed into vineyard-lined territory. A low melody wafted in—soft, distant, like it wasn’t coming from the limo’s speakers. “You guys hear that?” asked Kaela, her sunglasses slipping down her nose.

No one answered. Because they all did.

At Bokisch, the tasting began with Albariño and warm Spanish hospitality, but when Kaela stepped away to take a call, she froze. At the far end of the vineyard stood a man in a navy linen suit—identical to the one her ex-fiancé used to wear. He lifted a glass in silent toast, then disappeared behind the vines.

She didn't say a word to the others.

Later that afternoon, at Harney Lane, they sipped Zinfandel on a shaded patio, but Kaela’s gaze remained fixed on the rows beyond. She didn’t even drink her last pour—a first for her.

Back in the limo bus, silence fell over the group as Kaela finally spoke. “I think… I just saw Lucas.”

Gasps. Followed by one response: “But isn’t he in Barcelona?”

A tense quiet fell before the limo bus doors closed. No one noticed the navy suit again… but a glass of unfinished wine sat at the last table they’d visited, untouched but still warm.

Tomorrow’s winery: m2 Wines.

And none of them were sleeping tonight.
