Detour to Destiny – Part 2: The Soundcheck Switch

Hayden’s fingers tapped a nervous rhythm against the side of his iced Red Bull as the limo bus turned off I-880 toward San Jose. The group was rerouted—again. Tonight’s sold-out concert at the SAP Center was a bust. An unexpected electrical fire had shut down the venue hours before doors were set to open.

Panic had set in briefly. Their Elevated Limo Experience ride—originally meant for a pre-party cruise through the South Bay—had quickly become mission control. But Jenna, the group’s self-appointed “crisis manager,” made a call. Then another. And just like that, the plan changed.

A local up-and-coming band, Black Lavender, had been scheduled to open for the headliner. They’d managed to pivot and secure a last-minute slot at The Ritz in downtown San Jose. Not only that—the band was hosting a private soundcheck party for displaced VIP fans. Jenna scored eight spots.

The limo bus, decked out in LED mood lighting and a premium sound system, now doubled as their pre-concert club on wheels. As they rolled through Campbell and Los Gatos picking up stragglers, Hayden checked his reflection in the tinted window and adjusted his collar. “Who knows,” he muttered, “maybe this is the night it all changes.”

They pulled up to The Ritz, where a bouncer nodded at the arriving bus. Inside, the floor vibrated with bass. Onstage, Black Lavender was setting up. The lead singer—sleeves rolled up, hair slicked—caught the group's eye and gave a subtle wink.

“Guys,” Jenna whispered, “we’re not just at the show… we’re part of it.”
