Part 1: The First Quarter
They thought it was just a series of games. A fun way to bond before adulthood scattered them across the country. Five friends. One limo bus. Four major sporting events in four days across Northern California.
But by the time the limo pulled up in front of Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, a single envelope resting on the back seat changed everything.
It started innocently enough—Rafael, Bryce, Tino, Marcus, and Danny had been planning this “Limo League Tour” for months. They’d booked a jet-black limo bus through Elevated Limo Experience, complete with wraparound leather seats, a Bluetooth sound system, and a bar stocked with local IPAs and energy drinks. The itinerary:
-
Day 1: 49ers game at Levi’s Stadium (Santa Clara)
-
Day 2: Warriors vs. Kings in San Francisco
-
Day 3: Oakland A’s tailgate at the Coliseum
-
Day 4: Sacramento Republic FC match in downtown Sac
The moment they stepped onto the bus in Livermore, spirits were sky-high. Rafael toasted with Jarritos and tequila while Marcus synced the playlist. They laughed, shouted, danced, and Snapchat’d their way down I-880. Everything was perfect—until Bryce spotted the envelope.
Sealed with red wax. No name. No stamp. Just a logo—a triangle of three interlocking rings, embossed in matte black.
“Was this here before?” Bryce asked.
The bus fell silent. No one had seen it when they boarded. Danny, curious and always the instigator, broke the seal. Inside: a single Polaroid. Five men in suits. One of them… unmistakably Marcus’s father. Written on the back in Sharpie:
“The League never forgets. First Quarter begins now.”
Marcus went pale. “That’s… impossible. He told me he walked away.”
“Walked away from what?” Tino asked.
The driver—whose name they never got—said nothing. But the limo bus doors hissed shut behind them like a warning.
Outside, the game was beginning. But inside the limo, another kind of game had already started.
